Sleep Hygiene Spotlight!
Jun 24, 2024Do you struggle with getting good sleep?
Are any of these struggles familiar to you?
- Falling asleep at night?
- Waking up between 2-6am?
- Not feeling rested in the morning?
Great sleep means falling asleep easily, feeling relaxed and staying asleep through the night (and if you do need to get up to pee, falling asleep afterward is easy), and wake feeling rested and ready for the day ahead.
Sleep hygiene consists of practices that support great sleep. Just like oral hygiene requires consistent practices of brushing, flossing, oil pulling, etc, sleep hygiene is all about ongoing practices that create longterm health.
Here are some great sleep hygiene practices you can do to support awesome rest each and every night:
- Move your body during the day. Some sort of daily exercise is key to great sleep. We are animals and our bodies need to move each day for us to be able to fully relax at night. Walk, do yoga, interval train, swim, or dance. Find what you like, but get moving, ideally early in the day.
- Don't eat after 6pm- Going to sleep with undigested food in your stomach is a recipe for poor sleep. Your digestion should rest while you sleep. Eat a large lunch and a light meal at the end of the day.
- Get off of technology (any screens) by 8pm. Blue light from screens stimulates the brain and makes it challenging for the brain to relax and power down. Perhaps doing some silent meditation or a guided yoga nidra would feel good instead of being on a screen.
- Massage sesame oil into your feet before going to bed - This calms the nervous system and helps you relax to fall asleep, and stay asleep. Put on socks after applying the oil.
- Go to sleep before 10pm - If you stay up after 10pm, you will get a second wind, get hungry again, and lose out on the deep cellular repair that happens when you sleep earlier in the night (10pm-2am).
- Wake up before the sunrise- Allow your energy to build with the solar energy of the day and experience clarity. Sleep in and you will be groggy.
Try out any of these tips and notice the difference they make!
