Meditate With Me

I often hear my bonus kids talk about how fast things are going. When I think about my childhood, and talk to others in my generation and my elders, they agree that their childhood seemed to drag by like molasses dripping down a cold wall. It’s no surprise that the influx of information we take in on a daily basis is overwhelming to our nervous systems, and whether or not we know it, the anxiety and “what ifs” permeate into our thoughts, our bodies, and occupy the presence of the moment.

We live in a time when life can feel overly complicated at each and every turn. Yes, we need to listen to the news right now. It’s important to understand the rapidly changing landscape of our society. At the same time, I believe that the existential crises are just that. If we are going to be effective in the outer world, this is the time to look within.

I offer you an opportunity to start a practice, if you don’t already have one, to just sit. Take 10 minutes of your day, preferably in the morning, to do some DEEP (yet simple) self care. I cannot express how profound meditation has been for me in my life, and it has allowed me and many others to slow down and give credence to the amazing life we are living, holding joy and gratitude in my heart as a balance to the pain and suffering, simultaneously.

Meditation has a way of slowing things down. As you sit, and allow your mind to relax into the nothingness, in a sort of relaxing tra-nce, chances are you’ll encounter a river of thoughts. All the to-dos, what ifs, and I should-haves that fester in our mind. If you’re anything like me, it’s a torrent!

These are the existential thoughts that make life go so fast. If you fall in that river, and it really is a river, you might be swept away. The trick is to build a foundation of stones to tra-verse the river. As you can see these two words, trance and traverse, come from the same root TRA that means “across”.

Some say life is like a roll of toilet paper; the closer we get to the end of it, the faster it goes. I’m here to offer a second view: if we relish the beauty of life, honor the divine, and have at least one moment in our daily lives where we are fully present with ourselves, time just might slow down and let us truly appreciate this amazing existence we’ve been gifted, even during these trying times.
