In The Wake Of Helene
Sep 30, 2024I wrote a different newsletter to send out this week, but I scraped it in the wake of Hurricane Helene. I have to be honest, my heart is breaking, and I know I am not alone.
The storm hit us hard in Floyd but we have emerged mostly unscathed, with a couple fallen trees and a little water leakage. However, Helene devastated my hometown of Celo, NC. Most of Western North Carolina is without power and cell towers are down making any communication impossible as floods and high winds wrecked havoc across many beautiful mountain towns.
Last night, I got one short text from my parents via a satellite phone saying they are safe and their house (the one I grew up in) and my dad's glass studio are okay, although there are major washouts from the creeks. I cried tears of relief. Hallelujah!! They are safe!
Now all is silent again. There is no way to get to them as all the roads are closed and many severely damaged or gone. I have gotten a few other pieces of information about the area. The river I grew up swimming in took out houses, farms, and roads along its banks. The post office is gone. The local B&B flooded and part of it washed away, and the main bridge across the river is gone. I know eventually aid workers will arrive and maybe we can go help the community with repair and clean up.
For now I hope that we can all come together in whatever ways we can to support the efforts to heal and rebuild from this devastating storm. This is a time to show up for your neighbors and friends simply because we are all still here.
